What is M.E.S.S?


Our Modular Energy Storage System (M.E.S.S) is based on Eduard Heindl's Gravity Storage concept, which offers an innovative approach to energy storage. Using hydraulic pressure, height differentials, and a network of smaller cylinders, our technology efficiently stores and releases energy. Its adaptability and scalability range from MWh to GWh, enabling modular design. Repairs can be made by turning off specific modules while the system continues to operate. As the system expands, efficiency improves, encouraging ongoing investment. At the core are multiple hydraulic cylinders with cylindrically shaped pistons, featuring strategically positioned sealing rings to maintain system integrity.

Advantages of long duration modular storage

  • Modularity

    The M.E.S.S system is modular and uses underground reservoirs. We have the advantage of creating a smaller system and then adding more shafts when the customer needs it. So our energy storage system will grow with the customer's storage needs. Which makes our system an attractive option for potential customers. 


    Our unconventional configuration will reduce Pumped Storage Hydropower (PSH) costs and improve the value of the overall system because of its modular nature and closeness to the renewable assets that will be charging our system. Our system should be able to reduce deployment speed because we don't need to build the entire thing at once, we can start with a couple of cylinders and the main powerhouse. And use that beginning system immediately while the rest of the cylinders are being built. We expect a 20-40% reduction in LCOS compared to traditional PSH.

  • Geographical Constraints

    Our M.E.S.S system does not have as site-specific geography as traditional PSH does. We currently only need one water source and a height differential, we are currently exploring the possibility of using different lower reservoirs which would greatly expand our site options and may make the height differential and open water source no longer a requirement. Making our system able to be deployed as close as possible to any generation assets.


  • Comparing Technologies

    The incumbent technology in the grid-scale energy storage industry is Lithium-Ion batteries and Pumped Storage Hydropower. New traditional PSH systems are difficult to produce in the United States. Because of the geographical limitations; all the easily available sites for traditional PSH have been used up. Lithium-ion batteries are great for small applications but they have degredation issues which makes them undesirable for storing large amounts of energy over long periods of time. 


    Material availability: Both the EV and grid-scale lithium-ion storage rely on the same materials, like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Furthermore, only a handful of companies control the lithium-ion battery supply for both sectors. 

  • Mechanical over Chemical Batteries

    Tera Infrastructure believes that the solution to long duration energy storage will be a mechincal battery.


    Chemical batteries like lithium-ion, lead-acid, and sodium-ion have difficulties when it comes to large generation for long periods of time. They run into degredation issues which greatly reduces the life span of the system. And energy density has always been a problem with these batteries.


    Mechanical batteries like pumped storage hydropower don't have the same issues. With high energy density and long (60-80 yr) life spans. We believe that mechnical batteries will be the solution to our energy needs. 

  • Versatility

    Our M.E.S.S system offers unrivaled versatilty in the grid-scale storage industry. 


    Our system offers capacity from the MWh to GWh range depending on customers needs. And we offer the ability to start operation while construction is still going. This is rare in the grid-scale energy space, most generation sites (coal, natural gas, nuclear...etc) need the whole completed system to start generating revenue.
